Supreme Court Decision Curtails 'Court Shopping' by ATM Patent Trolls

A recent decision by the U.S. Supreme Court could put an end to the practice of shopping for a friendly court by complainants in patent cases. In TC Heartland LLC v. Kraft Foods, the Supreme Court ruled that the plaintiff was allowed to file a patent suit only in the state where the defending company is incorporated — narrowing the looser interpretation used by the federal circuit courts.

GTE Financial Plans to Install 61 Skimmer-Proof ATMs

GTE Financial Credit Union said it is installing 61 new ATMs with skimmer-proof technology. The Tampa-based credit union said its machines have been targeted by scammers using skimming devices in the past. Each of the upgraded ATMs costs about $35,000, but ATMs hit by skimmers can cost the credit union as much as about $50,000.

1 in 5 Smartphone Owners Worldwide Use Their Device Every 5 Minutes

Nearly two-thirds (63%) of smartphone users worldwide use their device every 30 minutes or more, and over a fifth (22%) tap into their phones every 5 minutes, according to the Interactive Advertising Bureau (IAB)’s  “Always On – A Global Perspective of Mobile Consumer Experience,” an in-depth survey of smartphone users compiled from 18 countries around the world. Respondents came from North America, South America, Asia, Europe, and Africa, and the majority of them, no matter their location, report that they access the Internet via mobile web and mobile apps at least once a day (mobile web – 88% and mobile apps – 84%).

While some experts believe the advent of mobile-payment apps, such as Venmo, PayPal, or Google Wallet, signal the death of cash, a new survey from YouGov Omnibus shows that only 35% of Americans have ever used them. Indeed, more people prefer using a debit card over all other payment methods when purchasing groceries at the store or settling a bill at a restaurant. When taking a taxi, the most desirable option is cash.

FICO just announced the availability of FICO Card Compromise Manager, an anti-fraud solution that can help proactively detect and prioritize compromised merchants and data breaches involving card data. The companion to FICO Falcon Platform, Card Compromise Manager is capable of detecting card present, card not present and ATM fraud. It uses analytics to provide a ranked list of potential compromises and recommended actions to minimize losses and customer impact.

Vidder announced the addition of endpoint trust assessment to its PrecisionAccess solution. A new Bouncepad survey reveals U.S. consumers love stores that offer technology and they want more tech options in the shopping experience. The study results cite that three out of four want more tech and say they are more likely to visit a retailer if desired tech was available. More than three quarters (78 percent) want retailers to do a better job of using technology to boost their experience. The research also notes that nearly two out of three consumers prefer self-serve compared to waiting on a line or having to track down an associate for help or a purchase. The survey states that two out of three (66 percent of consumers) have used self-service tables and kiosks in the retail environment.
